Like most photographers who ended up behind a camera without really
planning to be there, Kim has a varied background. He asserts that
his past is not checkered, but merely “dappled, like the play of
light through trees.” Although a native Minnesotan (and a fan of
Garrison Kiellor, you betcha), he spent his formative years in the
metro area of Portland, Oregon. He earned a Master of Arts
degree at George Fox University, and for over a decade worked in
Seattle’s documentary film and video industry. It was during this
time that he came to photography as a supplement to his creative
diet. His experiences there also prepared him to handle the
challenges of photography at larger events.
What is certain is that in whatever he has done, his work has always
led him back to his creative core, and to photography. Maybe it’s
his natural tendency to document moments and events. Maybe it’s his
love of light and metal machines and the craft that can transform
light into a lasting treasure.
